ARMIDALE CREEKLANDS VISION COMING TO FRUITION

One of Armidale’s most loved public spaces is set for a revamp.

Armidale Regional Council has taken another step in its vision to rehabilitate and enhance the Armidale Creeklands.

They will now seek funding from the State and Federal Government to engage experts to assist in a review of their 2004 Environmental Management Plan.

A central point of the city, the waterway connects the community in a symbolic and literal way.

In 2018, a Master Plan was developed in consultation with the people of Armidale to improve the creeklands area.

The aim to create a more vibrant civic space for events and to restore the creek to a more natural environment that would be safe to swim in.

Just recently, the final plan was placed on public exhibition and adopted by the council.

Council members believe the proposed funding is now critical to maintain momentum on the significant environmental project.

Mayor Tiley says “seeking funding for the necessary implementation works is the first step to making this project a reality.”

“This is a significant project with an estimated total cost in excess of $14 million. Clearly Council does not have the funds. However now that the plan is adopted it is in my view important that Council seek to achieve some plan implementation for this exceptional project.”

The adopted Armidale Creeklands Master Plan is available for the public to view on the Council Website.
