FIVE CHARGED OVER BREAK-IN AT HUNTER BUSINESS

Five people, including four teenagers, have been charged over a break and enter at a business on the New England Highway at Rutherford.

Officers at Port Stephens-Hunter Police District have investigated the offences which allegedly took place on two separate occasions.

Police say in the early hours of Sunday 27th of December 2020, three people made an unsuccessful attempt to break in.

They then allege on the 3rd of January 2021 at around 3am, a Nissan Patrol was stolen from a property in Dudley .

The car was then driven to the business in Rutherford and used to ram the front doors.

Police say items were then taken from the business.

It is estimated that the value of the damage and stolen property was upward of $60,000.

Amongst the stolen goods were two Kawaski trail bikes which are yet to be located.

Detective Inspector Ranald Urquhart says “Break and enter offences continue to occur throughout areas such as Rutherford, Aberglasslyn and Maitland, and our local police are continuing to target those crimes.”

“We will continue to run operations throughout the district – those who choose to continue breaking the law, we will charge you and put you before the courts,”

The teenage offenders charged were granted conditional bail and will face children’s court on separate occasions.

A 20-year-old man was refused bail and will face Maitland Local Court on Thursday 4 February 2021.
