WATCH | EXPLOSIVE CAR FIRE AT RUTHERFORD

Fire and Rescue has released a video of an explosive car fire in the Hunter, yesterday morning.

Two crews from Rutherford were called to a reserve on Broughton Street just after 5am.

On arrival they found a car well alight and got to work extinguishing the blaze.

The car was destroyed.

In the video you will see the reaction of hot magnesium and water.

Magnesium reacts with water to produce hydrogen, creating magnesium vapour.

The vapour produced heats very rapidly and, when water is added to the mix, it causes an explosive-like reaction.

Police are investigating.
