MASSIVE CLEAN-UP ON THE HUNTER RIVER

Volunteers have done their part to clean up the Hunter River, collecting 84 bags of rubbish in just 45 minutes.
16 people met up at the Tomago boat ramp yesterday and collected their PPE for the mission, which was organised by Clean4Shore and Hunter Local Land Services.
While inspecting the Hexham / Newcastle side of the river, they found masses of litter and got to work.
All up, they collected 2640 plastic bottles, 1870 glass bottles, 1375 pieces of polystyrene, 1210 pieces of hard plastic and 550 pieces of soft plastic.
That’s 110 bags of rubbish in total.
The team said it was a satisfying day, declaring the mangroves from Tomago under the Hexham bridge and upstream towards Heatherbrae are now completely clear of rubbish.
