HEAVY METALS LEACHING INTO LAKE MACQUARIE

A new report has found around 45 tonnes of heavy metals leach into Lake Macquarie each year from coal ash dams, near Vales Point and Eraring power stations.

The study, conducted by the Hunter Community Environment Centre, points the finger at regulatory failures by the state government.

The group is calling on the government to remediate the locations – something that’s already being examined by a parliamentary inquiry.
