WOMAN ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTED AFTER TRYING TO HELP DOG

A woman has allegedly been punched in the face after approaching a man who reportedly struck his dog several times outside a Coffs Harbour restaurant.

The 49-year-old man was later arrested at a nearby home on Bray Street and taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station and charged.

The incident occurred just before 9:30pm, after the woman parked nearby and approached the man.

Following an argument, the man allegedly punched the 58-year-old woman in the face, threw her to the ground, and grabbed hold of her by the throat.

Witnesses intervened and the man released his grip.

The pair continued to argue on the street, when the man allegedly assaulted the woman again, punching her in the face before walking away.

He has been charged with commit an act of cruelty upon an animal, common assault, and intentionally choke person with recklessness.

He was refused bail to appear at Port Macquarie Local Court today.
