SEVERAL DRIVERS CAUGHT MORE THAN 45KM/H OVER SPEED LIMIT

Police on the Mid North Coast have caught three drivers exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h in less than a fortnight.

The latest was last night, a 32-year-old man with a P1 licence was allegedly caught travelling 175km/h in a 110km/h zone on the Pacific Highway at Urunga.

The Traffic and Highway Patrol noticed the man driving a gold Mitsubishi Verada around 8pm.

Police suspended the 32-year-old’s licence and fined him $2,520 and six demerit points.

A similar incident occurred on Iluka Road in the Clarence Valley on Saturday afternoon.

A blue Toyota Corolla was found travelling approximately 152km/h in a 100km/h zone.

The P2 licensed driver, a 19-year-old woman had her licence suspended and fined $2,520 and six demerit points.

A 41-year-old man was also found travelling 101km/h in a 50km/h zone on Collombatti Road at Frederickton near Kempsey on Thursday 27th of August.

His licence was suspended and also fined $2,520 and six demerit points.

Officers caught another 10 drivers speeding on the same road in a 90 minute period.

Coffs-Mid Coast Traffic Inspector, Peter McMenamin, said this sort of behaviour is not only reckless but potentially deadly.

“To date in the Coffs/Clarence and Mid North Coast Police Districts, 13 people have lost their lives in 2020 – while less people have been moving around the state due to the pandemic, traffic in Northern NSW will only increase as the weather warms up.”

“You may have driven these roads for years, but that’s no excuse – drivers forget that they are in control of a high-powered machine which can be deadly,” said Inspector McMenamin.
