UPPER HUNTER MEMBER CONTINUES PUSH TO LEGALISE VAPING

Member for Upper Hunter, Michael Johnsen is continuing his push to legalise vaping in New South Wales, launching website vapethestate.com.au.

Health Minister, Greg Hunt delayed banning the importation of e-cigarettes in June.

Mr Johnsen believes the campaign has potential to create a smoke free future.

The NSW Nationals member said he was a smoker for 40 years, claiming vaping helped him quit.

“By legalising vaping in NSW, we would become the first state in Australia to support the community to become smoke free, leading to a far healthier society through health benefits.” Mr Johnsen said.

As part of the vapethestate.com.au campaign, Mr Johnsen is calling for the NSW Government to:

1. Recognise evidence that vaping is a proven method for smoking
cessation, and is a far safer alternative to smoking cigarettes.

2. Amend the NSW Poisons and Therapeutic Goods (Poisons List) Proclamation 2016 to
exclude nicotine from the Poisons List when used in the preparation of vaping and ecigarette products.

3. Support the creation of a domestic vaping manufacturing industry in NSW, ensuring
products are produced and sold at the highest possible safety standards.

4. Direct any government revenue generated by the legalisation of vaping to a new regional
health fund.

Mr Johnsen also said, “If people wish to vape instead of smoke, we should be allowing them make that free choice.”
