NEWCASTLE MEN FINED FOR CROSSING THE BORDER ILLEGALLY

Two Newcastle men have been fined for trying to enter New South Wales at several checkpoints without a valid permit.

The men were travelling from Ballarat and tried to cross the border via the Spirit of Progress Bridge on the Hume Highway at Albury on Thursday last week.

They were turned away and told to enter the state via air, after which they’d need to isolate for 14 days.

They then tried to cross the border through the Wodonga Place checkpoint and were refused.

On Saturday, police were told both men had entered New South Wales and were back at their homes at Raymond Terrace and Newcastle East.

The men, aged 68 and 69, were both issued fines.
