MAN IN STOLEN VEHICLE ATTEMPTS TO ESCAPE POLICE NEAR TAMWORTH

Police have charged a man in his 20’s after a high-speed pursuit near Tamworth.

It’s alleged the man reached speeds of 190km/h in a stolen vehicle.

Just after 11am on Saturday (August 1), officers detected a silver Kia Cerato hatchback allegedly travelling at 128km/h at Timbumburi.

The vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit ensued.

Police allege the driver reached speeds of 190km/h in a 100km/h zone while travelling through South Tamworth.

Due to safety concerns, the pursuit was terminated.

Police found the vehicle again on the New England Highway, north of Bendemeer a short time later, when it’s alleged the hatchback left the roadway and hit a ditch.

The 22-year-old man allegedly, ran from the vehicle and was arrested soon after.

The vehicle was found to of been stolen from the Blacktown area on Tuesday (July 28).

The man was taken to Armidale Police Station and charged with exceed speed limit >45km/h (x2), drive while disqualified (x2), exceed speed limit >10km/h, police pursuit and dangerous driving (x2).

He was refused bail to appear before Armidale Local Court in October.
