SPIKE IN TRAVELLERS SEES NEW TRAINS DELIVERED TO NEWCASTLE

The latest in a series of Waratah commuter trains being built for the Sydney rail network have arrived at the Port of Newcastle from China this morning.

The first two of the 17 Waratah Series 2 trains are part of a $4.3 billon upgrade to the state’s rolling stock.

“Over the last few years we’ve seen a rapid growth in the number customers travelling on the rail network which is why it is important we invest in new infrastructure, including new trains,” Minister for Transport Andrew Constance said.

The trains will go into initial testing and a final fit-out at Cardiff before being hauled by locomotive to the Auburn Maintenance Centre, where they’ll attach to Sydney’s rail network.

“Most of the testing will take place at night and across the weekend to minimise the impact on customers,” Mr Constance said.

The new trains feature double deck cars, priority seating, hearing aid loops, HD customer information screens and CCTV.
