SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY ADOPTED BY COUNCIL

Central Coast Council has approved a new social media policy, aiming to prevent the abuse of councillors online.

The document encourages councillors to “pause before they post,” while reminding them not to speak on behalf of the local government.

It follows a Facebook video posted by the mayor during February’s floods, which attracted widespread criticism.

Some have labelled it a ‘gag order,’ but Mayor Matthews says it sets clear boundaries.

“I absolutely own the post I made – however what I don’t own, or shouldn’t have to have owned was the hatred and the vile comments that came with that post,” Mayor Matthews said.

“Again, have a conversation with me personally, don’t put it out on social media.”

Complaints about behaviour on social media can be lodged with council’s General Manager.
