TWO PEOPLE CHARGED AFTER CAR PLOUGHS INTO TELARAH HOME

Two people have been charged after their car ploughed into a Telarah home on Thursday afternoon during a police pursuit.

Police were patrolling the New England Highway just after 2pm, when they noticed a vehicle allegedly travelling at speed.

They tried to stop the driver, but he failed to pull over, and a pursuit began.

The vehicle lost control at the intersection of Brooks and Raymond Street and went careering through two fences, before rolling and crashing into the front of a house.

A young couple and their four-month-year-old baby were inside the home at the time, but weren’t injured in the crash.

The driver and his passenger were left trapped in the overturned car, and were rescued by emergency services soon after.

The 21-year-old female passenger was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital, and the 20-year-old male driver was taken there by road.

They spent the night under police guard at hospital and were charged over the incident with a bedside court hearing held today.

Chief Inspector Rob Post says it was fortunate nobody in the house was injured.

“The male was charged in relation to the police pursuit and being a disqualified driver and bail refused,” said Chief Insp Post.

“The female was charged with outstanding arrest warrants and bail was refused.

There were a number of items, that are forming part of the police investigation, found in the car and they’ll be looked into now.”

Investigations are ongoing.

The pair will front Newcastle Local Court on Monday.
