MAN WHO ESCAPED FROM GLEN INNES JAIL ARRESTED

A man who allegedly escaped from a jail in the Northern Tablelands yesterday and went on a joyride has been arrested.

Just after midday, the man was spotted wearing prison greens in bushland next to the New England Highway, 15 kilometres north of Glen Innes.

At 1.30pm, a highway patrol officer saw a white Toyota Landcruiser reported to have been stolen, travelling south on the New England Highway.

The driver allegedly failed to stop, leading police on a pursuit which continued into Glen Innes.

He then turned the Landcruiser around and crashed into the back of the police car.

The car was later found on West Avenue, where it’s alleged he broke into a home and stole clothing and several other items.

About 2pm, he was seen jumping the fence at a local pool.

He was arrested soon after at Wilson Park, and taken to Glen Innes Police Station, where he was charged with a string of offences.

The 29-year-old was refused bail to appear at Tamworth Local Court via video link today.
