REPORT FINDS SCHOOL BUS DRIVER LOST CONSCIOUSNESS FOR 16 SECONDS

An investigation into a fatal bus crash in Newcastle last November found the driver lost consciousness, causing him to hit a pedestrian at Adamstown.

He told investigators he felt dizzy and looked for a place to pull over before “everything went black” for an entire 16 seconds.

At 3:30pm on Tuesday November 5, the school bus was travelling down Brunker Road when it hit a 35-year-old woman walking her dog.

The bus, with 16 Merewether High School students onboard, then ploughed into five parked cars.

Emergency services arrived and tried desperately to save the pedestrian, but sadly, both the woman and her dog died at the scene.

Thankfully, no one else was injured.

The Office of Transport Safety Investigation (OTSI) released a report this week, which found the driver became incapacitated and lost control of the bus.

Stating he most likely suffered a transient loss of consciousness, causing him to black out.
