POLICE PURSUIT ENDS IN MAITLAND BACKYARD

A car has crashed through a backyard fence during a police pursuit in South Maitland.
The pursuit started around 1:35am on the New England Highway near Rutherford after a Hyundai Tuscon failed to stop.
The chase continued through several Hunter suburbs, before the Hyundai crashed through a timber fence in and into the backyard of a home on Anzac Street, South Maitland.
It then crashed into a police car on Bloomfield Street.
The driver, an 18-year-old man, allegedly ran from the scene before he was arrested after a brief struggle.
He suffered minor injuries and was taken to Maitland Hospital for treatment.
Police say a search of the vehicle uncovered allegedly stolen property.
The 18-year-old was charged with six offences, including not stopping during a police pursuit, driving recklessly, being in custody of suspected stolen goods and breach of bail.

He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today.
