HUNTER SEES SECOND DAY OF STEADY COVID-19 CASE NUMBERS

Hunter New England Health has reported no newly confirmed COVID-19 cases in the local health district, now for the second day running.

Public Health Controller Dr David Durrheim says it’s very encouraging to see the region’s total remain steady at 276.

Six COVID-19 patients are being cared for in Hunter New England hospitals, including two in ICU, and 14 are receiving Hospital in the Home support.

New South Wales recored another 16 new cases in the past 24 hours, after testing a further 1305 people – while the state’s death toll remains at 26.

“What’s more encouraging is what we see when we look at Australia’s performance at the moment. Where Australia was on a sharp trajectory with the doubling time even three and a half days, that has now slowed to about six days,” said Dr Durrheim.

He says we cannot afford, however, to relax social distancing and other health directives.

“We know that other countries that had done well in the beginning , like Singapore, took their foot off the pedal, they relaxed their controls and now we see Singapore’s trajectory heading skywards,” said Dr Durrheim.
