NEW ENGLAND HIGHWAY SPEED LIMITS REDUCED AT WHITTINGHAM

New speed signs will be installed over the weekend on the New England Highway, after concerns the existing speed limit is too unsafe in some areas.

An eight kilometre stretch at Whittingham will be permanently reduced from 100 kilometres an hour.

Due to several residential driveways, a new speed of 80 kilometres an hour will be enforced just south of White Falls Lane to south of Racecourse Lane.

The speed limit will also be reduced to 90 kilometres an hour for another 5 kilometres, from Racecourse Lane to just north of the Golden Highway.

Member for the Upper Hunter Michael Johnsen says the reduced speed limits could save lives.

“The safety of all road users is important which is why we are taking steps to reduce the risk of crashes along the highway at this location,” Mr Johnsen said.

Drivers are being reminded to observe changing conditions, as lane closures and significantly reduced speed limits will be in place during the installation.
