POLICE SEIZE 54 KG OF CANNABIS AFTER STOPPING VEHICLE NEAR BALLINA

Police have made a surprising discovery during a routine traffic stop near Ballina, allegedly uncovering more than 50 kilograms of cannabis in the boot of a car.

Just before 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon, Highway Patrol officers pulled over a Honda Accord, north of Ballina, allegedly travelling 98 kilometres/hour in an 80 zone.

Officers stopped the car, and upon searching the vehicle, allegedly uncovered seven duffle bags in the boot, sealed with padlocks and cable ties.

Inside the bags police allegedly found 75 vacuum sealed bags of cannabis, weighing a combined 54 kilograms.

The stash having an estimated street value of more than $475,000.

The driver and the passenger, both men from Sydney, were arrested and taken to Ballina Police Station.

The 24-year-old driver was slapped with drug supply charges and a speeding offence.

The 29-year-old passenger was charged with take part in the commercial supply of cannabis and possess prohibited drug.

Both were refused bail and will appear in Byron Bay Local Court today.
