MAN ARRESTED OVER CARJACKING AND POLICE PURSUIT

A man has been charged over an alleged carjacking and police pursuit in the state’s far north yesterday.

It’s understood a 51-year-old woman was sitting in the passenger seat at a supermarket carpark in Byron Bay yesterday afternoon when a man jumped in the driver’s seat.

The 34-year-old allegedly ordered the woman out of the vehicle, before driving away.

Police were notified and started an investigation.

The man was later spotted driving on Coast Road at Skennars Head, prompting a pursuit.

The car was stopped near the M1 motorway, before the man was arrested and taken to Byron Bay Police Station.

He was charged with several offences, including reckless driving, fail to stop, failure to submit a breath test and suspended driving.

He’ll appear at Byron Bay Local Court today.
