FIRE ON COAL SHIP IN PORT OF NEWCASTLE

Just after 7.30 on Sunday night, emergency services responded to a ship which had caught alight at the Coal Loader on Kooragang Island.

Fire crews were told the fire was on the upper deck of the ‘Ecomah Go’, which had loaded around 10,000 tonnes of coal.

18 of the ship’s crew members were evacuated from the ship to a wharf area, and several were treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire was extinguished just before midnight, and a number of crew area were left damaged.

It’s not yet known what caused the fire.
