A senior constable will undergo specialist surgery after a man allegedly bit his ear in Lismore.
Police allege a 40-year-old man assaulted a 71-year-old security guard at a licenced premise on Keen Street, before an off-duty police officer intervened.
It was then the man allegedly held the officer in a head-lock and bit his ear.
He was charged with a number of offences and refused bail.
