NEWCASTLE’S CHERYL SALISBURY TO JOIN SPORTS HALL OF FAME

Cheryl Salisbury is set to become the first female footballer inducted into Australia’s Sports Hall of Fame.

The Novocastrian debuted for the Matildas in 1994, later retiring after making 151 appearances for the national side.

“People still talk about how Cheryl set new standards and expectations for how the Matildas should prepare to play and what they could achieve on the pitch,” said FFA CEO David Gallop.

Now 45, Salisbury played at the 2000 and 2004 olympic games, as well as running out for four world cups.

“Cheryl understood the potential of Australian women’s football and made it her mission to transform the sport she loved so that future generations of Matildas could reach their full potential and live their footballing dreams,” said FFA Chairman Chris Nikou.
