MAN ARRESTED OVER FATAL HIT-AND-RUN NEAR TWEED HEADS

A 52-year-old man has been arrested in relation to a fatal hit-and-run near Tweed Heads, just hours before he attempted to board a flight to Hong Kong.

New South Wales detectives are expected to apply for the man’s extradition later today, after he was early this morning taken into custody at Brisbane Airport.

Police will allege the man was behind the wheel of a Hyundai I30 which collided with two motorcyclists at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Tweed Valley Way in Tumbulgum on Monday afternoon.

One of the riders died at the scene, while the second man was taken to Tweed Heads Hospital with minor injuries.

Officers are still working to locate 2019 Blue Hyundai I30, which has QLD registration 170-ZCP.

It’s also believed to be missing the front registration plate and suffered considerable damage to the right-hand side in the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
