FIRST NATIONAL REPORT ON ENDOMETRIOSIS

A new report shows one in nine women, between the ages of 40 and 44, suffers from endometriosis.

The report, by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, is the first of its kind in Australia.

It also shows one in 15 women, aged 25 to 29, has been diagnosed with the chronic condition, which can cause extremely painful periods, heavy bleeding, lethargy and reduced fertility.

It takes an average of seven years to diagnose a woman after she first experiences symptoms, and there’s no known cure.

Experts fear the data may still underestimate the number of people living with the disease.
