WATCH & ACT ISSUED FOR FIRES NEAR KEMPSEY AND GRAFTON

A bushfire burning at Turners Flat near Kempsey remains at a Watch & Act level warning, as strong winds continue to lash much of the state.

Crews are working to protect a number of isolated homes in the vicinity of Willi Willi Road, with strong north westerly winds fanning the flames.

The fire has already burnt through more than 50 hectares.

A blaze at nearby Dondingalong has also been upgraded to Watch & Act, with residents in the path of the fire urged to enact their bush fire survival plan.

Further north near Grafton and more than 300 hectares of bushland has been scorched by a grass fire at Whiteman Creek.

Whitemans Creek Road and Clarence Way are both closed, with local RFS crews working to stop the spread of fire.
