MAN SHOT DEAD BY POLICE AT TAREE

A man who was armed with a knife has been shot dead by police in Taree.

Police were called to a home on Robertson Street on Wednesday afternoon, after concerns were raised for the man’s welfare.

After several hours of negotiations police forced their way in and tasered the man after he challenged them while holding a large knife.

He was shot after the taser and what police describe as “other tactical options” were ineffective.

The 40-year-old was taken to Taree Base Hospital where he died a short time later.

A Critical Investigation Team from the Homicide Department will look into the man’s death.

Police will speak to the media about the shooting in Newcastle on Thursday morning.
