OFF-DUTY POLICE HELP ARREST MAN ACCUSED OF ROBBERY

A 26-year-old man has been arrested at a Waratah shopping center in relation to alleged robberies in the Newcastle area.

The man fitting the description of a suspect involved in thefts at Wallsend and Callaghan was spotted by off duty police officers.

“These off-duty officers were spending time with their families, but the role of a police officer never switches off. This shows the great level of teamwork within the Newcastle City Police District throughout all units,” Detective Chief Inspector Scott Parker said.

The man was refused bail, and is due to appear at Newcastle Local Court on July 11.

Inquiries continue into a female accomplice, who allegedly assaulted a 20-year-old female during a robbery at the University of Newcastle around 10:30pm on May 4.
