CENTRAL NEWCASTLE’S JERMAINE ALE TO RETIRE

A major blow for Central in Newcastle Rugby League, with centre Jermaine Ale confirming he suffered a complete rupture of his achilles tendon late in Sunday’s loss to Souths.

The 34-year-old is set to have surgery in two weeks.

Ale will then face a four-month recovery period, and told NBN News he’s effectively now retired as a player, but will remain part of the Butcher Boys’ coaching staff.

The former Australian schoolboy representative played four games for Canberra in the NRL, but enjoyed most of his success in the Hunter, winning several premierships with Wests.
