Two men have been charged with assaulting an off-duty police officer at a cafe at Pilliga in the state’s north-west.
It’s alleged the men punched the officer several times in the face on Tuesday morning, leaving him swollen and bruised.
A witness helped the officer fend off the attackers, who fled the scene.
Police began an investigation and later charged a 44-year-old and an 18-year-old man with assault occasioning actual body harm.
Both men are due to face Wee Waa local court on May 30.
