The main event at Newcastle’s Surfest is underway, with small conditions and onshore winds greeting competitors in the men’s round of 144.
It was a slow start, with event organisers waiting until just before lunchtime to send the first heat into the water.

The big names, including Soli Bailey and Ryan Callinan, are expected to hit the water in coming days.
