An 18-year-old man has been charged over the assault of a 55-year-old at Port Stephens.

The incident happened at the Tilligerry RSL Sports Club on January 25.

It’s understood a group of people had been removed from the venue, when an 18-year-old became involved in a scuffle in the carpark.

During the altercation, a 55-year-old man was punched in the face, falling to the ground and losing consciousness.

He was taken to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital suffering head and facial injuries.

He also had a metal plate inserted into his badly-broken leg.

The teenager fled the scene before police arrived.

Following inquiries, he was arrested on Friday at Raymond Terrace, where he was charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm.
