POSSUM SKIN ARTWORK EXHIBITION ON DISPLAY

It’s an unusual subsititute for paper….but it’s also a technique used in indigenous art for thousands of years.

30 possum skin artworks have gone on show at an exhibition in Tamworth – created by school students, young mothers and indigenous elders.

The unique art form tells the individual stories of each artist.

“The artworks are about your story, about your journey through life. Where you lived, where you come from and about your family I guess, what you put down and how it relates to where you are today.”

Each took about eight weeks to complete…

Part of a project encouraging the passing-on of ancient skills from generation to generation.

“It has grown to a community workshop as part of the health-wise indigenous mental health program that had elders and young mums come and participate and we’ve then grown the project to incorporate three of the local high schools.”
