Train services between Muswellbrook and Singleton have been suspended following a coal train derailment near Muswellbrook earlier this afternoon.
The incident has damaged the rail corridor as a major clean up operation gets underway to right overturned wagons.
It’s understood a locomotive travelling in the opposite direction struck the derailed wagons causing major damage to the rollingstock and spreading coal throughout the scene.
The site is under quarantine as transport safety officers begin their investigations.
Passengers are being advised to expect lengthy delays and plan for changes in travel arrangements.
