POLICE FIND ILLEGAL DUMPING GROUND CONTAINING ASBESTOS

Police have discovered an illegal dumping ground, containing asbestos, at a property on the Central Coast.

Investigators believe the illegal dumping operation is linked to organised crime.

Strike Force Dothan was established by officers attached to Redfern Police Area Command, to investigate anomalies recorded in the removal and disposal of waste, as part of the Green Square Town Centre development.

In August 2016, contractors were engaged as part of the development and were required to remove excavated material, including asbestos, and restricted waste that could only be safely disposed of at two Sydney sites.

Police and the NSW EPA will allege that up to 17,000 tonnes of waste appear to have been dumped or disposed of illegally.

This morning, Strike Force Dothan has executed a search warrant at a property on Cherry Lane at Kulnura.

Investigators along with officers from the NSW EPA have spoken to the property owners, it’s understood they were advised the material being dumped at the property was clean fill.

Samples will be analysed and it’s anticipated that large scale remediation will be required.

A 48-year-old man remains before the courts after being charged with numerous offences by Strike Force Dothan investigators, including fraud offences totalling almost $4 million relating to the illegal dumping of asbestos.
