NEWCASTLE MAN SENTENCED OVER POLICE ASSAULT

A man has avoided jail for biting a police officer, during a drunken brawl in Newcastle.

Callan Murphy was today handed a nine-month suspended sentence over the April assault, outside the Prince of Wales Hotel.

The 23-year-old was also given a 12-month good behaviour bond for resisting arrest.

His father Andrew was also charged in relation to the incident, and received a similar sentence after pleading guilty in May.
