ANOTHER HORROR DAY FOR PORT STEPHENS RESIDENTS

Residents at Port Stephens near Newcastle have endured another horror day – as wild winds fanned an out of control bushfire at Salt Ash.

It prompted an emergency warning earlier in the day – with fire crews tonight battling to gain the upper hand.

The fire has now been downgraded to Advice status.

If you are in the area of Salt Ash near Rookes Road, Lemon Tree Passage Road and Brownes Road take shelter as the fire approaches.

Strong westerly winds are impacting the fire ground, with increased fire activity at Salt Ash near Rookes Road, Lemon Tree Passage Road and Brownes Road.

Lemon Tree Passage Road has been reopened to traffic.

Power and telecommunications services previously disrupted by the fire have now been restored.

Emergency alert telephone messages have been sent to people in the area.

On Saturday night the fire reached homes along Tilligerry Track, however there are no confirmed reports of property loss or damage.

People in Tanilba Bay, Mallabula and Lemon Tree Passage should continue to monitor the situation closely and be prepared to put your bush fire survival plan into action.

A south-westerly change pushed the blaze towards the communities of Tanilba Bay, Mallabula and Lemon Tree Passage on Saturday afternoon.

The Koala Shores Port Stephens Caravan Park was evacuated, with people and caravans taken to the Lemon Tree Passage boat ramp at Henderson Park.

People in the area may still experience smoke and ash, and are reminded to stay alert.

The fire has already burnt through more than 2000 hectares of bushland.

Firefighters are also battling to contain an out-of-control blaze in the state’s north, just south of Casino.

The fire is burning off Mothersoles Road south west of Coraki.

Strong south westerly winds have increased fire intensity over this afternoon, with the fire breaking containment lines.

The blaze is heading north east towards Sandy Creek.

Residents in Lagoon Road, Reynolds Road & Casino Coraki Road should seek shelter as the fire approaches.

Emergency alert telephone messages have been sent to residents in the area.
