BUSHFIRE DANGER PERIOD BROUGHT FORWARD FOR TAMWORTH REGION

Rural Fire Service crews are gaining the upper hand on a blaze at Pinkett, near Glen Innes.

It’s burnt more than 1400-hectares, but overnight, crews established strong containment lines.

Meanwhile, the number of winter bushfires has sparked concern for those in the Tamworth area.

The start of the official danger period for the region has been brought forward to September 1, partly due to the drought.

“Where you would normally have our fuels would be wet, with the humidity and the winter that we would normally get – we just haven’t had that rain so all those forest fuels are really dry,” Superintendent, Allyn Purkiss.

The RFS is calling for landholders to start reducing fuel on their properties, now.

“Make sure they’ve got a good paddock that they can move stock into that doesn’t have a lot of fuel in…mainly projecting those assets, so protecting their sheds, protecting their crops if they have any, obviously the houses.”
