DROUGHT RESEARCH PUBLISHED IN MEDICAL JOURNAL
A University of Newcastle researcher has been investigating the devastating effects of drought on rural communities, including the psychological stress on farmers.
She’s found that reducing stigma about seeking professional help early, and making it easier to access services, will improve farmers’ mental health.
“We know people in rural communities are often very stoic, and have a high level of resilience and that can be a barrier for seeking help when they need it.”
600 farmers across rural New South Wales were involved in the study.
Emma Austin’s research was published today in the Medical Journal of Australia.
