NEWCASTLE’S MARITIME MUSEUM TO CLOSE

Bad news tonight regarding Newcastle’s Maritime Museum, with the facility to close on Wednesday after members of the Museum Society today voted to wind up operations.

It follows weeks of uncertainty about its future.

The museum will vacate its heritage-listed building in Honeysuckle, with landowner, the Hunter Development Corporation, agreeing to help find proper storage facilities for its historical items.

  1. Maybe you need to look into why it had to close, the management of it and what has happened to items that were donated to them. Speak to the volunteers who have put in 40+ years into it and see how they are feeling. It all started at a hall at lambton and these volunteers gave up their time , their hearts and their energy into getting a maritime museum/ centre for Newcastle.

  2. I don’t understand this. It was a purpose built facility. What has gone wrong?

  3. Sad news. Does this have anything to do with the chinese ownwership of the port of Newcastle?.

  4. If council had worked with the Maritime Museum instead of actively working against it for many years it would have a chance and our great maritime heritage would have been preserved for generations to come. Petty politics and bureaucratic empire building equals collateral damage…
