FORMER AUSTRALIAN BOXING CHAMPION TROY WATERS PASSES AWAY

Former Australian middleweight boxing champion Troy Waters has passed away after a long battle with leukaemia, aged 53.

Waters, who spent much of his life on the NSW Central Coast, was a star of the sport during the 1980s and early 1990s, fighting for a world title on three occasions.

He’s best remembered for his brutal fight with Terry Norris in 1993, with the second round of that bout named by “The Ring” magazine as the “Round of the Year”.

Fellow Central Coast boxer Jamie Pittman says, “He had such a big impact to all the young boxers growing up on the Central Coast. We were talking about it this morning, how devastating it is to have lost our biggest hero.”

Waters was inducted into the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame in 2009.
