  1. Hi
We have found over 25 pieces of asbestos (‘super 6’ ) containing material at Terrigal Beach on Saturday and found a further 39 pieces today between the rock pool and the northern flag on the beach. The EPA confirmed that it is white asbestos. Most pieces were between 5-10cm large and concentrated right in front of the surf life saving club at the water’s edge during low tide. We also gound some much more dangerous dry pieces up above tge High Tide Mark. We used gloves collcting them and tripple bagged them as well as placing them into an Asbestos Waste bag supplied by the surf club. It alarmed us that many children played with the rocks and asbestos material at the water’s edge unaware of the danger. It only takes one inhaled dry fibre of asbestos to potentially become ill with Mesothelioma 20 or 30 years later. What if the fibres stick to swimmers, hair, toys, towels, bags and dry during the day? I feel we all have a social responsibility to protect our community from this legacy. Pieces have also been collected at the Terrigal Haven.
It is important that a management plan is drawn up, the source of this contamination investgated, regular samples/ evidence colkected, identified and quantified and that some sory of remediation process started so that we can all feel safe at the beach.
There won’t be any easy fix but keeping everyone in the dark is not a solution.
    I have images, too
