WINE GROWERS ANGRY OVER MINE BLAST

Vignerons in the Hunter Valley are angry over a blast at a Hunter Valley mine that sent an orange plume of dust over surrounding farmland.

The blast happened last Friday at Yancoal’s Mount Thorley Warkworth mine.

“This is not an isolated incident. Yancoal has demonstrated a total lack of respect for the health and livelihoods of its neighbours,” said Antony Bainton of Bainton Family Wines.

“These mines are huge and they are causing pollution that is damaging people’s health. The least the Government could do is ensure they are complying with their licences. We need better protection,” he said.

Landholders have since written to the Department of Planning, claiming Yancoal should be investigated and its licence suspended, until it can demonstrate it can carry out blasts without creating environmental harm.
