MAN DROWNS AT PORT MACQUARIE’S OXLEY BEACH

A 60-year-old man has drowned while bodyboarding at one of Port Macquarie’s unpatrolled beaches.

Emergency services were called to Oxley Beach just after 2:30pm, but the man could not be saved.

“Witnesses tell us that the man was about 90 metres out and was going under the waves. By the time surf rescue and police got to the location the man unfortunately had drowned” – Inspector Mick Aldrigde.

It’s unclear whether the victim is a local man – it’s believed he was alone at the time.

“We do have moderate conditions so the waves are around the one to two metre mark. A lot of our beaches do have some strong rips at the moment so people really do need to consider their ability in the water at the moment”- James Turnham – Lifeguard Supervisor
