MAN ARRESTED AFTER LENGTHY POLICE PURSUIT IN LISMORE

A 30-year-old man has been charged following a police pursuit in Lismore yesterday.

Police say they received a call from a woman after a red Toyota Camry struck her vehicle on Ballina Road in Lismore Heights just before 11am.

Officers were told that the driver of the Camry was being erratic and allegedly failed to stop after the collision.

The vehicle was then sighted several times, allegedly being driven on the wrong side of the road and driving towards a patrol car before fleeing at speed.

Police then initiated a pursuit.

It’s alleged when the driver spotted police, he drove at high speed into an open wetland area near the Wilson River.

The chase then continued for a short time, where the driver allegedly drove into various fences and properties before crashing into several police cars.

The vehicle rammed a third police car before being blocked by two stationary police vehicles.

The man was removed from the vehicle and arrested. He was taken to Lismore Base Hospital for mandatory testing.

He was charged with a string of offences, including being unlicensed.

He was refused bail and will face Lismore Local Court today.
