UPDATE: One person remains unaccounted for following a fiery crash involving two trucks on the M1 earlier today.

The two trucks, including a fuel tanker, collided in the southbound lanes of the M1, about 1km south of the Freemans Drive interchange, just before 1pm.

One truck caught fire as a result of the collision, and a car was also damaged.

One person remains unaccounted for, and the M1 remains closed in both directions.

The truck fire also sparked a bush fire near the crash site, with the RFS working to contain the blaze.

Police are asking motorists to delay their travel with the M1 closed in both directions at Cooranbong, in the Lake Macquarie region, as emergency services respond to reports of a truck fire.

Police are yet to determine the exact circumstances of the incident and will provide more updates as they come to hand.
