POLICE SEARCHING FOR RED S.U.V. AFTER MAYFIELD HIT-AND-RUN

Police are seeking public assistance to identify the driver of a vehicle that left the scene after striking an elderly pedestrian, who later died in a Newcastle hospital.

Just before 1pm last Friday, a 91-year-old man was crossing Stedman Street in Mayfield, when he was struck by an SUV.

The man was taken to John Hunter Hospital, but died early yesterday.

The car has been described as a red Mitsubishi ASX, and investigators believe there would be damage to the front of the vehicle.

It’s believed the car stopped briefly after the crash before being driven away.

Any witnesses or people with information about the car or its driver is being urged to come forward.
