CRITICAL INCIDENT INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED NEAR TAMWORTH

A critical incident investigation is underway following the death of a man in a head-on collision between a car and truck north of Tamworth today.

Around 8.45, police were in pursuit of a stolen ute on the New England Highway near Bendemeer, when the ute collided with a truck.

The driver of the car died at the scene.

The truck driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for mandatory tests.

On impact the truck’s cabin burst into flames, sparking a grassfire.

RFS and Fire and Rescue NSW Firefighters are at the scene.

The highway is expected to remain closed in both directions for most of the day.
