BEDROOM FIRE FORCES APARTMENT BUILDING EVACUATION

An apartment block in Newcastle has been evacuated after a fire broke out on the 13th floor overnight.

The fire took hold in the King Street building around 10pm, forcing about 200 residents to gather in the foyer while crews attended.

The internal sprinkler system extinguished the fire, containing it to one bedroom.

Police believe the fire was caused by an electrical appliance.
