CAFE GIVES NEW LIFE TO OLD CLOTHES

For many of us, they are two of our great loves – coffee and clothes…
A cafe in Newcastle brought them together today, all in the name of upcycling.
Hamilton’s Commons Clothing Repair Cafe encouraging people to learn basic sewing skills over a cuppa.
“Because clothes have become so cheap we just keep burning through them and a small proportion get recycled and get sold on…and the majority gets shipped overseas to another country,” organiser Jessica Millers says.
Australians buy an average of 27 kilograms of textiles each year…and incredibly, 85 per cent of it ends up in landfill.

I was there & it was a wonderful way for people to gather, almost like times past as women sat & sewed but now it was with sewing machines & men enjoying the opportunity. I appreciated the help & patience of those women who’ve helped me get 3 articles from my overcrowded mending box out in circulation. I wish I could see the news coverage on iview.
